Saint Joseph School

Weekly Chapel in the Upper School

Every week, students in Grades 5–8 gather as a division for Chapel, a time to pause, pray and reflect together on what it means to live a virtuous life. Each month, a different Upper School teacher leads Chapel around that month’s virtue and a saint who lived it, from St. Francis of Assisi and reverence in October to St. Paul and zeal in May.

What Happens at Chapel

1

Gather

Students are welcomed and introduced to the virtue and saint of the month.

2

Share

A Scripture passage, a story from the saint's life, a real-life scenario or a personal story gives students something to think about. In September, students reflected on the Parable of the Sower and how Saint Peter kept trusting Jesus even when he was afraid.

3

Reflect

Students ask, "What does this have to do with me?", such as where they're being called to practice the virtue right now, or what this saint would do in their place, and share their thoughts.

4

Respond

Students leave with one small, concrete challenge for the week, like including someone who's sitting alone or thanking someone they usually take for granted.

5

Pray

Chapel closes with a prayer asking the saint's intercession and the grace to live the virtue, and students carry a prompt into their personal prayer journals.

Throughout the Year

  • Prayer through the seasons of the Church year, including Advent, Lent and Easter
  • Community moments, like Student Council officer speeches and recognizing student achievements
  • A year-end review of all the virtues in May

See this year's virtues and saints on our Monthly Virtues page.

Chapel is held weekly in the Lower Church at Saint Joseph Parish.
