History of Saint Joseph School
Saint Joseph School traces its roots to 1939, when the Sisters of Charity of Halifax came from the Academy of the Assumption in Wellesley Hills to oversee the religious education program for the youth of Saint Joseph Parish in Needham. In 1954, Cardinal Richard Cushing granted permission for the construction of a parish school, and the Sisters opened Saint Joseph School with kindergarten and first grade students.
Over the decades, Saint Joseph School grew alongside the community it serves. What began as a small parish elementary school expanded to include additional grade levels, a middle school program, and an early childhood center. Throughout this growth, the school remained steadfast in its commitment to academic excellence, Catholic formation, and service to families throughout Needham and the surrounding communities.
In 2020, Saint Joseph Elementary School and Monsignor Haddad Middle School formally united to create a single Preschool–Grade 8 institution. During a period marked by unprecedented challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, faculty, staff, families, and parish leadership worked together to successfully integrate the school communities while maintaining a strong educational experience for students.
Today, Saint Joseph School serves children from age 2.9 through Grade 8 within three divisions: the Early Childhood Program, Lower School (Kindergarten–Grade 4), and Upper School (Grades 5–8). This structure provides students with a developmentally appropriate educational journey while fostering a strong sense of community and continuity across all grade levels.
In 2022, the school adopted a Head of School leadership model, further strengthening its commitment to strategic growth and long-term excellence. Following the leadership of founding Head of School Ian Snyder, Kristen Fiumara was appointed Head of School in 2025. Under her leadership, Saint Joseph School continues to build upon its rich traditions while preparing students to thrive in an ever-changing world.
A significant milestone in the school's history came in 2024, when Saint Joseph School was named a National Blue Ribbon School by the United States Department of Education, one of the nation's highest honors for academic excellence and school culture. The school also successfully earned Continued Accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), affirming its commitment to continuous improvement and educational quality.
Today, Saint Joseph School stands as a distinguished Traditional Roman Catholic school in the heart of Needham, Massachusetts.
